Review: The owner Erwin is a very friendly person who made us very welcome. The lodge is ideally situated in this small seaside village and a circular walk of the village did not take more than half an hour.
Arniston Beach House: Arniston Beach House is a charming, neat, fully furnished self-catering holiday home situated in the small village of Arniston, just five minutes’ walk from the white sandy beaches and azure blue ocean. One of the best kept secrets on the Cape South Coast is the picturesque, fishing village of Arniston or Waenshuiskrans, situated in the Overberg, only 120 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Arniston is renowned for its unspoilt coastline, exquisite turquoise coloured sea and beautiful beaches.
It was named after the British vessel that was wrecked off the coast in 1815, leaving only six survivors of the 378 on board; the skeleton of the ship can still be seen stranded on the beach. Over the years the wreck’s name has become synonymous with the place name, and today Arniston and Waenhuiskrans are used interchangeably. Locals also know the town as Waenshuiskrans, named after the cave that is large enough to house several ox-wagons and that one could visit in low tide.
The 200-year-old restored fishermen’s village, Kassiesbaai, recognisable for its lime-washed and thatched houses, remains intact and has been declared a National Monument in its entirety. From May to December, the famous Southern Right whales can be seen in the bay to mate and calve in the warm waters.
Arniston Beach House can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests and comprises four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with an indoor braai. The first and second bedrooms each contain a double bed, the third bedroom contains twin single beds and the fourth bedroom contains bunk beds. All linen is supplied.
The open-pan kitchen, dining room and lounge includes an indoor braai area and leads to two outdoor braai areas, one of which is under cover. The TV room is equipped with a large TV with DStv and a sound system, while the fully equipped kitchen includes all major appliances, cutlery, crockery, dishwasher, an automatic washing machine and a tumble-dryer.
Outdoor activities in the area include swimming or sunbathing on the never-ending beaches, visits to the Waenhuiskrans, fishing for local yellowtail, steenbras, galjoen or musselcracker, or buying the latest catch from the local fishermen, collecting oysters and delicious shellfish from rock pools, and bird-watching for bird lovers.
Review: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Arniston Beach House. It is the perfect house for a carefree beach holiday – very close to the beach, casual yet stylish and tasteful, well-equipped and clean but not too precious. Our two young children loved it and we can’t wait to be back for a longer stay. Katie was very friendly and professional and Colleen kept the house spotless. Thanks for the memories! Truter family.

Review: There aren’t many places to stay In Arniston so the hotel is the best bet. We booked in winter and booked a room with a fireplace. Were quite disappointing to hear renovations were happening so couldn’t have the fireplace that time around. Seems a bit silly to renovate your fireplace rooms in winter. Nevertheless, our room was lovely – sea facing with underfloor heating. It’s the perfect spot to watch the fishermen leave in the mornings on their boats. The restaurant dining experience was mediocre. Everyone tells me about the famous bouillabaisse soup that is now not available on the menu anymore, however the breakfasts were good. Friendly staff. Will be back.
Clydesdale House: This self-catering house is decorated in natural colors and situated close to the hotel and sea. The house sleeps six people, is fully equipped and has a huge patio and braai area, overlooking Kassiesbaai (fisherman’s village) and Aniston’s turquoise sea.
All linen and towels are provided but bring your own beach towels. Apart from the garage, the house has 3 parking bays and an alarm system. There are always new adventures to be experienced at the southernmost tip of Africa. The region offers wonderful retreats for both the weary and adventurous traveler.
We do not take one night bookings and no pets allowed. No fireplace.
Review: Our stay was great, we were welcomed and shown around by Sune (the owner) who was extremely helpful. The house was very well equipped and one could not ask for more. Clydesdale is near to the Arniston hotel where the staff were very helpful regarding where we could buy fresh caught fish for a Braai and as we had friends staying there the kids could use the hotel bikes. Arniston is a wonderful place to get away from it all and Clydesdale house was the perfect venue to sit back and watch the ever changing ocean and skies while sipping a chilled glass of wine.
